Einstein’s Dreams Promotional Poster
While reading Alan Lightman's Einstein's Dreams in high school, I was fascinated by the chapter entitled "26 April 1905" and thought it would make an incredible film. Not certain that I had the funding to produce the film itself, I was inspired to at least begin with a poster depicting the themes of the movie that I hoped to one day adapt from the book.
Each chapter of the book presents the fantastic dream of a fictionalized Albert Einstein when he was a young scientist. Chapter "26 April 1903" depicts time going more slowly the closer one lives to the sun. People live atop high mountains because they believe that altitude delays the aging process.
Height Has Become Status
For this poster, I used Adobe programs to create a layered image in front of an amaranth red background. The red is brilliant and inviting like the attractive warmth of a sun, but it is also unnatural like Einstein’s surreal dream. My photographs of faces overlap each other to depict mountain ranges reaching from the dark depths below to the brighter more colorful, coveted space depicted in the sky.
Album Cover
Coming from a generation of music listeners who have streamed our tunes digitally, I had been largely unaware of the wealth of art that has traditionally adorned record sleeves. Now that vinyl records are gaining renewed popularity as a kind of retro craze, my generation is finally discovering cover art for ourselves. I was eager to engage in this art form that enhances music appreciation through visuals; I wanted to create an album cover for the music I love.
Record albums usually have 6 to 8 songs or 22.5 minutes of music on each side, and the sleeves that cover them are decorated front and back. Cover art often portrays personal information about the artist, like a snapshot of the mood and priorities in life for the musician when she or he was recording the album. Ideally, the art of the cover reflects the theme of the album’s music in order to provide the listener with a visual experience that she or he can associate with the songs.
Our Love Sustains Me
I chose to focus on the theme of love songs, a subject that is personal to me because I thrive on the support I have from the love in my home. I assembled a physical prototype of my album, “Our Love,” in a way that would reflect how personal the project was to me. I chose a font that looked handwritten to typeset the song titles, and I presented personal photos of myself with my then boyfriend and my dog, Arya, in what looks like a shadow box picture frame.
Sushi in the Sukkah Invite
This invite was designed for a fun Sukkot dinner party with a sushi twist. I combined elements from both themes using a piece of nigiri as the inspiration for the layout. The seaweed wrap serves as the space for the event info, while the fish also doubles as a visual nod to the sukkah’s paneled walls. The white background represents the rice, adding contrast and keeping things clean. It’s a playful mix of tradition and modern design, meant to set the tone for a laid-back, festive evening.
Candyland for CASA
I was commissioned by a social sorority on the Lehigh campus to create a poster to promote a philanthropy event they were hosting. The design needed to be playful while still clearly communicating the logistical details for the event.
The event was Kappa Alpha Theta’s annual “Candyland for CASA,” which raises money for Court Appointed Special Advocates tasked with representing the best interests of foster care system children in the courtroom. I explored layouts that included motifs of a Candyland board’s colorful winding path, but found the game’s busy images were distracting from the message.
Fun and Philanthropic
Ultimately, I discovered that a more limited color palette better complimented the project and did not distract from the logistics information or the message that it was for charity. Using Illustrator, I experimented with many sketches and digital drafts. Although the logos are the official brand images of the organizations referenced, all of the candies and decorations are my own illustrations and designs.
